Modern Signal is an independent review publication. This page explains how our content is produced, what our rankings are based on, and how we maintain integrity in a space that's often compromised by paid placements and undisclosed bias.

How our reviews are produced

Our reviews are based on aggregated research, not independent physical testing. Specifically, each review draws from:

  • Manufacturer specifications — weight, core material, face material, handle length, grip size, and stated performance characteristics.
  • Published expert reviews from specialist outlets like Pickleheads, The Dink Pickleball, Pickleball Effect, and others with direct testing programs.
  • User feedback aggregated from Reddit communities, Facebook groups, and verified retailer reviews (Amazon, Dick's Sporting Goods, brand websites).
  • Publicly available performance data — DUPR testing, sanctioned tournament usage, community ranking lists.

We do not claim to have personally tested every paddle or shoe over multi-week windows. The evaluations you read synthesize multiple independent sources with a single consistent scoring framework.

Where we've had direct experience with a product, we say so. Where we haven't, we frame the review as "based on aggregated research."

Our ranking framework

Across categories, we weight evaluation criteria consistently. For paddles:

  • Playability (~25%)
  • Forgiveness / sweet spot (~20%)
  • Construction quality and durability (~20%)
  • Price-to-performance (~15%)
  • Specialized fit (for the category — e.g. tennis transition, senior ergonomics, budget)

Numeric scores are editorial rankings derived from aggregated signal, not raw test measurements.

Affiliate relationships

Modern Signal uses affiliate links. If you click through and purchase, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. These links are marked rel="sponsored nofollow" per search engine guidelines.

Affiliate commissions do not influence our rankings. We do not accept payment for product placement, ranking order, or inclusion in our lists. A paddle we recommend because we believe it's the best pick is exactly the same paddle we'd recommend without an affiliate relationship.

Where multiple retailers sell the same product, we link to the one that offers the best combination of availability, price, and legitimate support. We do not prefer retailers based on commission rates.

What we don't do

  • We do not accept paid content, sponsored posts, or pay-for-play rankings.
  • We do not accept product samples in exchange for positive coverage. If we receive review samples, we disclose that fact on the specific article.
  • We do not publish sponsored tier lists, best-of roundups, or "advertorial" disguised as editorial content.

Update frequency

Pickleball paddle and shoe markets shift significantly every 6 months. We re-review each category roughly every 6 months and update articles when:

  • A new paddle launches that changes the competitive landscape
  • A paddle on our list is discontinued or substantively updated
  • Pricing shifts meaningfully
  • Community consensus shifts (a paddle we recommended falls out of favor; a sleeper pick gains real traction)

Updated articles show the revised date at the top ("Last updated…"). Where an update represents a significant change, we note what changed near the top of the article.

Errors and corrections

If you spot a factual error, outdated information, or an obvious omission, we want to fix it. Contact us at [email protected] and we'll update within 48 hours.

Material corrections are noted at the bottom of the affected article with the date and nature of the correction.

Medical, legal, and financial content

Some of our content covers injury prevention (e.g., pickleball elbow). These articles are informational, not medical advice. We cite professional sources (Harvard Health, Houston Methodist, published physical therapy research), but you should consult a sports-medicine physician or physical therapist for diagnosis or treatment of actual injuries.

Accessibility and readability

We aim for a reading level appropriate for adult recreational players (approximately 10th grade). We use technical terms where they're standard in the sport, and we define them on first use.
